Solutions Experiment

I filled 2 glasses with 1 C warm water and added 2 t sugar in 1 glass and 2 t cornstarch into a 2nd glass. I stirred each glass well. We sipped each cup. The sugar water tasted sweet. The cornstarch tasted like dough. We folded a piece of paper into a cone, placed it inside a funnel, and poured each liquid into a bottle. We checked to see if there was any residue on the filter paper. We tasted the filtered liquids to determine whether there was a difference. .....................................................................................................................................................................................................

cups, bottles, filter paper, funnel, warm water, corn starch & sugar (2 tsps. each)

Materials

Procedure

We saw some residue on the cornstarch filter paper because it was a suspension and the cornstarch does not react strongly with the water, whic is why it was cloudy like milk. There was no residue on the sugar water filter paper because sugar water is a solution, which is why it was clear. My hypothesis proved correct.

Result

Solutions Experiment

If I put cornstarch in the water it will turn into a white suspension, and most of it will settle over time and become less cloudy. If I put sugar in the water, it will dissolve to become a clear solution.
