Solids, liquids, and gases are all made up of atoms, molecules and/or ions. Their behaviors change within each phase of the states of matter. Particles in a gas are well separated and have no regular arrangement. Solids are tightly packed together and usually have a regular pattern. Liquids are close together, in the middle of solid and gas, and they have no regular arrangement. Gases take the shape and volume of any container no matter the size or shape. They are very easy to compress and they have lots of free room to move between particles. Liquids can assume the shape of a container, starting from the bottom, and they depend on gravity. Particles can move and slide past one another. They are not easily compressible and there is little free space between particles. Solids are a fixed volume and shape and they are rigid, which means the particles are locked into place. They are not easily compressible and there is little free space between particles. Solids do not flow easily because they are rigid and the particles cannot move or slide past one another.

What is Matter?Matter is the stuff all around us and it is made up of atoms and molecules. Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass (weight). There are five physical states of matter and we will learn about three of them Each state of matter is called a phase because each state is different in how the particles are packed together and how they look to the eye. Changing from one phase to another, will not change the atoms in the element or compound. The molecules stay the exact same but they may become colder, heavier, or denser. There is no chemical change, just physical. .

What is Matter Composed Of?In order to learn about the differences about the different states of matter, you must first know what molecules, atoms, and ions are. **Matter is composed of atoms, which are very tiny particles that get their name from a Greek word “atmos” that means “cannot be cut apart”. **The whole world is made up of atoms in different states of matter and each atom has different properties that make it up. **Atoms are the smallest particles that can be identified as a particular element . Atoms consist of three different types of particles and they are protons, neutrons, and electrons. **Molecules are the smallest particles that can be identified as a particular compound. Molecules are defined as formations from chemical combinations of atoms. **Ions either have a positive or negative charge and can only be seen in compounds. **Elements are made up of atoms and molecules, whereas compounds are made up of molecules and ions.

What are the general properties of a solid, liquid and gas? Why do they have these properties? How are the properties related to their use? Solids are used where we need something to keep its shape or to support something, such as a chair. Liquids are used where we need something to flow, like making a drink. Gases are used when we need something to spring back after it has been squashed such as a flat tire or when we need something to spread out like bug spray.
