Understanding the Solar System

Earth, Moon & Sun

1. MercuryMercury is the smallest planet in our solar system, and the closest to the sun. Mercury is a terrestrial planet with a solid, cratered surface.

7. UranusUranus is a gas-giant and is the seventh planet from the sun. Uranus has 27 moons and some faint rings. The planet rotates on its side.

2. VenusVenus the second closest planet to the sun, and is only slightly smaller than Earth. Venus does not have any moons or rings.

6. SaturnSaturn is a gas-giant and is the sixth planet from the sun. Saturn has 53 known moons and has the largest ring system.

5. JupiterJupiter is a gas-giant planet and does not have a solid surface. Jupiter has 50 known moons. A large storm system has been raging on the planet for years, called the Great Red Spot.

4. MarsMars is a terrestrial planet and is the fourth planet closest to the sun. Mars is known as the Red Planet, because the iron minerals in the soil oxidize (rust) and makes it appear red.

3. EarthEarth is the third planet from the sun. Earth is a terrestrial planet with one moon. It takes 24 hours for the Earth to rotate and 365 days to completely orbit the sun.

8. NeptuneNeptune is a gas-giant and is the farthest planet from the sun. Neptune has 13 moons and 6 rings.

What causes shadows?

Shadows occur when an object gets in the way of the sun's light. The shadow is the dark region where the light is blocked.
