Soil Conclusion

While collecting the data from the soil, we were in the forest right next to Robert E. Bell Middle School, towards the middle of where the cars park along the road, going into Bell. We had a combination of steep land, and flat land. Our area was on the path, plus a little down the hill, to the left (that’s where it got steep). The first test we did was for the color, our results had an average of 8.5, which means is a fair aeration (how “loose” the soil is), and medium organic matter, and has a light brown color. This is a little below standards, it is suppose to be a 5 or 6. Next, was temperature, our soil was 21 degrees Celsius, which meets standards (ideal temperature is 20 degrees Celsius). To continue, our soil’s texture was a combination of sand and clay particles, since one day it was sandy, and the other day it was more clay like. This means, neither day met standards, the ideal texture is loam (40% Sandy, 40% Silt, and 20% Clay combination). The standard pH level is between 6.0 and 8.0, ours was 7.0 so our soil did meet standards! We also had low phosphorus level, while the standards are medium-high, so we did not meet standards in the criteria. To move on, Nitrogen. Our soil also had a low amount of Nitrogen, and the standards are medium, so we also did not meet the standards for Nitrogen. Lastly, Potassium, which we did meet standards to! Our soil had high/medium amount of Potassium, and the standards was medium. To continue, some sources of error we could have had was during some of the tests, the color the soil water was unclear, or was between two numbers, so we had to estimate, potentially being not 100% accurate. However, overall our data is reliable considering we have minimal sources of error, and we followed all of the procedures. Chappaqua’s soil lacks in nutrients, and does not reach some standards (4/7), making the quality not the best. however not dangerous.
