Software Engineer Career Summary

In software engineering, there are 18 specializations. The one that interests me the most is contemporary physics software engineering because I love computers and physics. In this area, the engineer focuses solely on creating software that analyzes and configures physic concepts.Example: One specializing in this may have to create a software that allows customization of atomic charges to show the electric field lines between those charges. This software can then be used in teaching industries.

Necessary College Degree

Software engineers are those who design and develop software. More importantly, they apply principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to create, test, and evaluate software applications that acertain the performance of computers.

The responsibilities of a software engineer are investigating current applications, producing specifications, costing new or modified systems, agreeing proposals, writing new software and operating manuals, testing the product to ensure that it operates satisfactorily, training users, and handling support and feedback. The video to the right shows a primary view of a software engineer and his everyday responsibilities.

Job responsibilities

Entry-level requirements for software engineering include an associate's degree, while most jobs require a bachelor's degree. However, more complex and specialized jobs require a master's degree. Degrees must major in at least computer science, computer information systems, software engineering or mathematics.* Note: While these degrees are necessary, employers value those with other experiences such as programming and software engineering classes and familiarities with problem-solving, communication, math and science skills.

Schools These specified degrees can be obtained at many universities. The schools with the top ranked software engineering programs for undergraduate and graduate school are California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Georgia Institute of Technology.
