HISTORY-Sodium was first isolated by British chemist Humphrey Davey in 1807.-He did this through the electolysis of NaOH.- This element was used in alchemy to attempt to create gold.
Atomic Structure
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES- Sodium is a reactive earth metal. It will react with water in an explosive way but will react with alcohols and other liquids as well.- Sodium is a solid at room temperature.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES-Pure, recently cut Sodium is a silver color.-It will react with the air if exposed. This reaction leaves a coating of smokey gray sodium oxide atoms.
SOCIETAL APPLICATIONS- Sodium is the sixth most abundant element in the earth's crust.- It does not exist naturally as a pure substance.- We find it in table salt (NaCl), sodium carbonate, borax, etc.
