Social + Emotional Development

During the preschool years, children improve steadily in emotional self-regulation--the ability to adjust their emotional state to a comfortable level of intensity.

Emotional Development +Self Regulation

Kindergartners are "learning optimists" who rate their own ability very highly, underestimate the difficulty of tasks, and are willing to exert efffot on new challenges.

Kindergartners readily internalize adult evaluations--when these messages are negative, children show signs of self-criticism, anxiety, and weakened motivation.

Young children with gratifying friendships are more likely to become psychologically healthy and competent adolescents and young adults.

Parental warmth, patience, explanations, and reasonable expectations for their children's maturity are linked to many aspects of kindergartners' competence.
