Social Cognitive Theory

Strength & Weakness of TheoryStrength - Explains many reasons for learning (p. 203)Weakness - Self regulation takes a long time to learn (p.193)

• It is based on Albert Bandura’s work.• Behaviors can be learned through “watching and imitating” (Snowman/McCown, 2013, p. 187).• Learning is the result of the interaction / influences between personal characteristics, behavior, and the environment and is called the triadic reciprocal causation ( p. 187)• Self-regulation (how to change one’s behavior to accomplish goal) and self-efficacy (perception of what you can do) are a large part of behavioral learning (p. 187)

Social Cognitive Theory &EL Haynes -5th Grade - Mr. Kipp

Application 1• Mr. Kipp uses an acronym of “I-Y-O-T” for “In your own words test” (Kipp, 1:34).• Used to aid in remembering what to do when reading non-fiction text.• Mnemonics help with the storage and retrieval of information (Snowman & McCown, p. 196). Application 2• Modeling helps the “learner pick up the major features of a skill or strategy…by watching and listening as a model exhibits the skill (p.201). • Mr. Kipp models the “IYOT” strategy to his students (Kipp, 2:45 – 8:00)• Modeling also helps increase self-efficacy in a learner since he/she can see the skill and believe he/she can do the same (p.200).

Learning ObjectiveStudent will be able to apply a reading strategy to comprehend non-fictional text while reading.

• Redesign the second step of IYOT to give the students a list of self-questioning stems to be used for guidance instead of having to construct their own questions; this will give them more demanding questions (p. 197).• Self and peer questioning is a learning tactic to place "stress on factual recall" (p.196)• A formative quiz done periodically will allow the teacher to see progress (p. 309)• This allows the teacher to see if the reading comprehension strategy is working for each student.

• Technology can provide scaffolding to help with learning (p. 206).• For students who do not respond well with Mr. Kipp’s comprehension strategy, commercial software such as Achieve3000 effectively serves the same purpose; this would be a re-design of Mr. Kipp’s entire non-fiction comprehension strategy lesson. • The Achieve3000 website (www.achieve3000.com) claims the software gives “rigorous informational text with targeted scaffolding” and helps with comprehension via activities.• Scaffolding provides help / hints to learners which are eventually removed (Snowman & McCown, p. 36).• An assessment such as a formative essay/paragraph test, can be given to determine comprehension of the material at frequent intervals (p. 309).
