[2018] Cate Aube: Sleep and the Cardiovascular System

Sleep and the Cardiovascular System

Importance:Irregular sleep patterns have been linked to a variety of cardiovascular health issues including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. Poor sleep also causes an increase in stress hormones which can cause cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, a series of cardiovascular problems can lead to poor sleep for example: -Angina-Arrhythmia(abnormal heart rhythms)-Sleep apnea(pauses in breathing that stress cardiovascular system)-Fluid build up in lungs(caused by heart failure)This can lead to a vicious cycle of poor sleep and poor health.

A lack of sleep can also cause you to be more vulnerable to respiratory infections like the common cold and flu and make existing  respiratory diseases worst, like chronic lung illness. The less sleep you get, the less time you body has to repair tears in veins and arteries which increases your risk of having a heart attack or a stroke.

Challenges:Recently I have been finding that although I am getting a full eight hours of sleep, I'm not feeling well-rested when I wake up. A contributing factor of this could be that I sleep with my radio on which could be keeping me awake. Another factor is that I am on my phone almost until I go to sleep. By putting my phone away a half hour before bed, I can improve my sleep. I've also found that the way that i track my sleep isn't very accurate or easy to read so for the next entry I will see if using an app on my phone to track sleep would be more organized and clear.

Goal:My SMART goal is to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. I was finding that my sleeping habits were out of line and needed to be fixed. In the entry, I will show the benefits of sleep on the cardiovascular system.
