Slavery began in America in 1619 when African American Slaves were brought into Virginia to work in crop fields. These slaves were held against their will and considered as property. Slaves had no human rights, or ability to leave the plantations or farms. Slavery went on until president Abraham Lincoln released the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves within the Confederate states in 1863. In 1865 the Civil War ended, and the Thirteenth Amendment ended all slavery throughout the United States. The amendment was effectivly working on June 19th of 1865.

Slaves sometimes refused to eat in order to die, so slave owners would force feed slaves by shoving food down their throats or break their teeth. Many slave owners would steal slaves from other owners, so owners would brand their slaves with an iron.A slave that goes by "Henry Brown" was shipped in a box from Richmond to Philideplia in an attempt to free himself.

Lasting Impact

Slavery was a major contribution towards the economic development of the United States. After slavery was abolished, segregation came about, but eventually equal civil rights was enforced throught America.
