"Be it good or bad, [slavery] has grown up with our society and institutions, and is so interwoven with them that to destroy it would be to destroy us as a people." John C. Calhoun explains the consequences of both abolising slavery and keeping it. Although, he believes that getting rid of slavery will only abolish the relations between the two races. He says that "he relation now existing in the slaveholding States between the two, is, instead of an evil, a good–a positive good."

"...that the whole world had abolished slavery. Aye, the name, but not the thing; all the powers of the earth cannot abolish that." James Henry Hammond believes that slavery cannot be abolished. They use them for a purpose and call them slaves. He belives that their must be a class to perform the drudgery of life and the menial duties.

"Lift up your heads, 0 ye despairing slaves! Yet a little while, and your chains shall snap asunder, and you shall be tortured and plundered no more!" Garrison believes that through faith in God, resolving slavery is near for them. They will no long be kept in chains and their friends in the North are their hope in aboloshing slavery and will choose to stay true to themselves and the slaves.
