- Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work - Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture - Slaves can be deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand compensation- Mauritania was the last jurisdiction to officailly outlaw slavery - Slavery was established in Viginia in 1654- 1791, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin- The cotton gin caused the almost immediate replacement of many crops with cotton, and slavery became once again firmly entrenched until its modern abolition

Types of Slavery

Chattel Slavery- named because people are treated as personal property and are bought and sold as if they were commodities Bonded Labor- occurs when a person pledges himself or herself against a loan Forced Labor- occurs when an individual is forced to work against his or her will, under threat of violence or other punishment, with restrictions on their freedom

- The word "slave" comes to us from Brzantine Greek "sklabos" which was the name for the slave people- In 1822, Liberia was founded as a colony by American slaves who had been freed - The thing that makes it stand out from European style slavery was the fact that it was a sign of good repution and honor if a slave owner treated his slaves with respect and kidness- Slavery is an ancient practice- According to studies done by anti-slavery groups, there are currently more slaves today than at any time in history- Many slaves in America refused to eat, wanting to die rather than toil through the regime of slavery- There were many instances on board ships where slaves had thrown themselves over board - Many owners stole slaves from each other - Once in slave owning societies, slaves were indoctrinated into Christain Religion - All slaves were a burden upon any captain once the boat had been docked
