Sinkholes

Where are sinkholes most common?Sink holes are most common through out the state of Florida. This is because Florida is underlain by thick carbonate depostites that are susceptible to dissolution.

How are sinkholes hazardous to humans?Sinkholes cause thousands of dollars in damage to buildings and vehicles. Sinkholes are always a big threat but especially on the roads. Most sinkholes happen underneath.

How are sinkholes formed?Sink holes are formed when limestone dissolves. Cracks and pores are enlarged and hold more acidic water.Sinkholes are formed when the ground above cavities collapses and surface material is falls towards the voids.

How are sinkholes measured?Sinkholes are measured by diameter and depth.Examples:The Qattara Depression in Egypt is the largest natural sinkhole on earth. It measures 50 miles in length and 75 miles in width.The Great Blue Hole is an underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. The circular sinkhole measures 300 meters across and 124 meters deep and is in the center of the Lighthouse Reef.

How to detect sinkholes?Look for:1) Ponding — small ponds of rainfall forming where water has not collected before.2) Turbidity in water in nearby wells during early stages of sinkhole development3) Structural cracks in walls, floors and pavement; cracks in the ground surface
