William Shakespeare (1561 - 1616) was married to a woman named Anne Hathaway when he was 18 years of age. She was 26 and pregnant when they were married, in 1582. Six months later, Anne gave birth to their first child, Susanna, and two years after that, to twins, Judith and Hamnet.He had 7 siblings named Joan, Margaret, Gilbert, Joan 11, Anne, Edmund and Richard. His father, John Shakespeare, held various jobs, and at one point he was even paid to drink beer.His only granddaughter, Elizabeth - daughter of Susanna - died without child in 1670. Shakespeare therefore has no descendants of his immediate family.

DID YOU KNOW...Shakespeare would sometimes perform his own plays, and also women were not allowed to act in plays during Shakespeare’s time, so in all of his plays, women’s roles were performed by boys/young men.

DID YOU KNOW...To mark Shakespeare's birth and death, the Royal Shakespeare Company is spearheading a three year Jubilee, between 2014 and 2016, that will involve theatre performances, events and live streaming cinema around the world.

DID YOU KNOW...When Shakespeare was bured in the Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, he had the words, “...Curst be he that moves my bones” inscribed on his grave. Though it was customary to dig up the bones to make room for others, Shakespeare's grave remains undisturbed to this day.

DID YOU KNOW...During his life, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. His most notable plays include 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'Hamlet', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'The Tempest' and much more. His last play The Two Noble Kinsmen is reckoned to have been written in 1613 when he was 49 years old.
