Purpose:To Seperate a Mixture of Salt and Sand.

What I Got:Sand 9.57gSalt 7.93gTrue Amount:Sand 9.77gSalt 9.78g%AccurateSand 98%Salt 81%

Steps: To Seperating Salt and Sand1) Record the mass of sand and salt on a piece of paper.2) Put salt and sand in a funnel and pour water to seperate.3)Then let the sand dry in the funnel then get the original mass of sand.4) Take the salt water and put it in a heating bowl and set it on a ring stand above a bunsen burner to boil.5) Once done boiling, weight the bowl of salt and then wash out the bowl and weight the empty bowl so you can subtract the two masses and get the original mass of salt.

Things that would have caused my %Sand to be less than 100%:1) Could have spilled sand on the table.2) Could have left some sand in the filter paper.

Things that would have caused my %Salt to be less than 100%:1) Could have spilled salt on the table.2) Could have spilled some of the salt water before being fully boiled.

What might have happened for either the sand or the salt to be experimentally massed to be greater than 100%?The reason why the salt or sand would be massed to be greater than 100% is that it could have been a mathematical equation.

2 Specific ways to improve the lab:1) Clean out all filter paper and beakers to make sure all the salt and sand stay in the lab and get a better accuracy.2) When boiling the salt water have a top over it so no salt pops out and make sure no water is spilled.
