Steps to a healty independent child

In the early years of development children start to show steps toward self-regulation, starting with compliance. They will show awareness of a caregivers wishes & expectations & can obey simple requests & compands(Berk,2013). However, for this skills to continue to develop, the caregiver has to model or "teach" the appropriate behavior. Well know psychologist, Vygotsky, he believed that children cannot guide their own behavior until they have the steps taught to them by an adult. This leads the child to self-direct their speech, which is a step toward metacognitive control, knowing what they need to do.

Moral judgement tells us what people should do, yet this does not always help a person know how to do what's needed. The ability to posses self-control, mean inhibiting urges to in ways that violate moral standards, which is sometimes called self-regulation(Berk,2013). Through parental warmth, resonable expectations and limit setting, children can be guided to reach this goal.

Intro Early Childhood

Delay of gratification is simply waiting for an appropriate time & place to engage in a tempting act(Berk,2013). This sounds easy, yet for some children this task is very difficult. The need to have the tempting item is simply to much to resist, and they reach out to partake. Children who have the ability to wait have an increased development of attention and language skills, which are required for delay effects. Children who are frustrated, angry, or emotional disconnected, find delay difficult. Yet, studies show that children who receive warmth, and patient redirection from caregivers, have an increased ability to delay their wants.

Resistence is the hardest part of self-regulated behavior. Children find this a difficulty in everyday situations. The children with the most self-control can divert their own attention to other things, helping them avoid the desired item with a stronger sense of success.

Guiding children to a point of flexible capacity for moral self-regulation is a key element of learning. Having the ability to monitor one's own conduct, consistantly adjusting it as circumstances present opportunities, creates a strong self-understanding(Kopp&Wyer,1994). Some strategies can include:*Having something of interest to divert attention while the child is waiting.*Give a task for the child to implement while they wait.*Read a story.*And be sure to encourage the efforts displayed by the child.
