Self-Control

The quality of self-control might be likened to a rare and precious genuine pearl hard to get and rare to find in today's world but one a christian must keep asking for.(1 John 5:14, 15)

“If you, although being wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children,” Jesus Christ once reasoned, “how much more so will the Father in heaven give holy spirit to those asking him!” (Luke 11:13)

SELF-CONTROL

Self-control is ... “control of oneself, restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires.” Or, it may be said that self-control means maintaining poise and balance of mental and physical forces, keeping them restrained or restricted

A Christian who wishes to develop and display self-control needs to:! Pray to Jehovah through Christ for God’s spirit so as to express this valued quality. (John 14:6, 14)! Pray incessantly, honestly and sincerely from the heart (Ps. 139:23, 24)! Work to gain and maintain balance by means of daily Bible reading and study.! Apply Biblical instruction and place Jehovah before his/her-self.(Ps. 16:8)! Regularly attend Christian meetings to receive vital spiritual instruction (Heb. 10:24, 25)! Regular activity in the Christian ministry will help develop maturity and greater self-control (Col. 4:6)! Study of God’s Word and the pursuit of Kingdom interests(1 Cor. 2:6-16).! Work at being “moderate in habits” all the good ones.(1 Tim. 3:2, 11)! Watch your associations!!!Bad associates may take you away from Christian fellowship and cause you to become a lover of the world. (1 Cor. 15:33)! Show empathy in your dealings with others, putting yourself in their place at times. (Matt. 7:12) Give others the benefit of the doubt.(Prov. 16:20)! Humbly accept Biblical or Christian discipline.

CONTROL YOUR TEMPER, Jesus said of himself: “I am mild-tempered and lowly in heart.” He pronounced mild-tempered ones happy. (Matt. 11:29; 5:5) meditate on his words and follow his example.(Heb. 12:1-3,Proverbs 29:11) ! Do not quickly take offense, rise above petty annoyances (Prov. 20:22)(Eccl. 7:8, 9)! Seek ways to turn aside the anger of others (Prov. 15:1) ! Even if others cause offense, act quickly to rectify matters (Eph. 4:26; Matt. 5:23, 24)! Christians cannot afford to lose self-control and fly into a rage, showing hatred instead of love, nor should they harbor such enmity(Prov. 26:24-26)! Be kind, not harsh. ! Be considerate, not critical. ! Be mild-tempered rather than ill-tempered (Col. 3:18-20) ! Shun obscene speech, gossip and slander (Eph. 4:29-31)! You must control your thoughts! Bring to mind and meditate on things that are righteous, chaste, lovable, well spoken of, virtuous and praiseworthy. (Phil. 4:8, 9) ! Exercise self-control in eating and drinking with moderation(Proverbs 23:20, 21, 1 Cor. 6:9, 10)! Enjoy recreation that is upbuilding and moderate. Use good judgment in not keeping late hours(1 Tim. 4:8)
