Secret Codes

This is a code used by Police and Military.

This is the James code.

Putting messages into secret code so that they cannot be read by anyone but the intended receiver is called cryptography. Cryptography is used to encrypt messages sent by by governments, military and businesses. Easier - A code is a system of symbols, letters, words, or signals that are used instead of regular words and numbers to send messages or store information. A code is used to keep the message short or to keep it secret. Harder - Codes and ciphers are forms of secret messages. A code replaces words, phrases, or sentences with groups of letters numbers, or symbols, while a cipher rearranges letters or uses substitutes to disguise the message. Secret writing has been used about as long as writing has existed.

Invisible ink has been used by spies for centuries. At the time of the Revolutionary War, invisible ink made of a mixture of ferrous sulfate and water was commonly used. The secret messages were often written in between the lines of a normal letter. When heat or a special chemical (such as sodium carbonate) were applied, the message that was placed in between the lines would appear. In modern times, inks containing special properties are used and require viewing under ultraviolet (UV) light to see the message.

Recipe for invisible ink .Put some lemon juice in a bowl and mix with a few drops of water Wet a cotton ball and use it to write a message on a blank piece of white paper Wait for the “ink” to dry and become completely invisible After the ink has dried, heat the paper up using a hot light bulb
