Secretariat

SECRETARIAT

Secretariat was born March 30, 1970 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was a big chestnut Thoroughbred, giving him the nickname "Big Red." He was owned by Penny Tweety and raced by Ron Turcotte. Penny went against Ogden Phipps for a coin toss where the winner would have first pick of the two foals sired by Bold Ruler in the following fall. Phipps won the toss and chose the black foal, so Penny had no choice but to take the small chestnut colt.

Record Breaking

Secretariat is famously known for his astounding race in the Belmont Stakes, where he won by 31 lengths, beating the record 25 lengths set by previous Triple Crown winner, Count Fleet in 1943. He also ran the fastest 1.5 miles in history at 2 minutes and 24 seconds.

Secretariat had to be euthanized due to having lamininitis, an incurable hoof condition. He died October 4, 1989.
