Sea Turtles

Come take a glimpse of a sea turtle's life

Hatchlings often emerge together because it is almost impossible for a single hatchling to do it alone. Emerging together increases the chance of survival against predators because a single hatchling would be an easy target.

Watch a 3min video on baby sea turtles first emerging and running into the ocean.

Did you know? The largest species of sea turtle was the Archelon, which measured 7 meters (about 21 feet) in length and lived during the time of the dinosaurs.

Sea Turtle DietWhat sea turtles eat depends on the subspecies, but some common items include jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, sponges, snails, algae and mollusks.

A resting or sleeping turtle can remain underwater for 4-7 hours!

Fun fact: The oldest known sea turtle fossils date back about 150 million years

Sea turtles are an endangered species. In the past 100 years, human demand for turtle meat, eggs, skin and colorful shells have reduced their populations. The recent shrimp trawling has killed many because shrimp is not a sea turtle's diet.

Create a poster illustrating what would happen if a sea turtle hatched by itself compared to a group of sea turtles who hatched together on the sea shore. Underneath, write two paragraphs n why it is better to hatch in groups.
