Acromegaly is caused by the pituitary gland producing too much growth hormone (GH). Acceleration in bone growth and organ enlargementIn a adults most cases are caused by a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland
Treatment may include removal of the tumor, radiation therapy, and injection of growth hormone blocking drugs.
Left untreated, acromegaly can lead to worsening diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The disease also increases a patient's risk for cardiovascular disease and colon polyps that may lead to cancer.When acromegaly is adequately treated, life expectancy returns to normal and the other complications remit.
No way to prevent.
This disorder affects men and women equally and generally happens between the ages of 40-60.The incidence rate of acromegaly in the general population is 5.3 per 1 million per year.
