Teacher's can review student's notebooks and see if there are any parallels or differences they can expand on. Since you are observing their thinking, you are able to see any misconceptions they have and the organizational skills they are using. Teachers can use notebook entry assessments similar to a pre-assessment in the way that they know how to guide their next step in instruction.

They allow students to individually synthesize their own thoughts and utilize investigation skills. As they draw and write notes, they are further connecting with the lesson subject. Allow you to assess their knowledge by the detail of their information or drawings. As well, they also help assist the students in becoming responsible learners.

Keeping a notebook helps students organize their observations and synthesize their data, and allows them to refer back to their notes. They're a powerful learning device as students participaite in writing about their science experiences and express their thinking. Their entries also count as artifacts used within the assessment system.


Thinking Tools

Students who are struggling with writing can use observational drawings or graphs to express their learning or misconceptions. By providing individualized feedback (such as on sticky notes), teachers can have students improve their explanations and descriptions. Students are able to continually work at their level of ability while teachers push them to think deeper to further their learning.

Enhance Literacy Skills

Students are able to use different types of writing such as: expository writing, procedural writing, narrative writing, descriptive writing, and labeling. The more writing practice students have, the more comfortable and experienced they become. Notebooks offer many opportunities to develop and enhance student's communication skills (written, visual and oral).

Teachers can reflect together on their practices and challenges they've experienced with the notebooks. They can build off of each other's success with a clearer vision and strive towards improvement. Teacher collaboration and working towards shared goals also help build school community.
