Procedure

What color absorbs more heat?

I think that the glass covered in black paper will absorb more heat.

Materials

The water in the drinking glass covered with black paper had absorbed more heat and was a higher temperature after two hours than the water in the drinking glass covered with white paper. The water in the drinking glass covered with black paper was a higher temperature because darker surfaces absorb more light and heat than lighter surfaces.

Results

What happened & Why?

- 3 identical drinking glasses- Water- Measuring cup- White paper- Black paper- 2 rubber bands- Tape- Thermometer for measuring temperature of water

Data

Temperature at 1:30 pm (Before being put in sun):Glass wrapped in black paper: 55 degrees FahrenheitGlass wrapped in white paper: 55 degrees FahrenheitGlass not wrapped in paper: 55 degrees FahrenheitTemperature at 2:30 pmGlass wrapped in black paper: 59 degrees FahrenheitGlass wrapped in white paper: 58 degrees FahrenheitGlass not wrapped in paper: 61 degrees FahrenheitTemperature at 3:30 pmGlass wrapped in black paper: 60 degrees FahrenheitGlass wrapped in white paper: 54 degrees FahrenheitGlass not wrapped in paper: 58 degrees Fahrenheit

Question

Hypothesis

1. Wrap the first glass in black paper using a rubberband and tape.2. Wrap the second glass in white paper using a rubberband and tape.3. Fill the three glasses with 1 cup of water each.4. Take the temperature of each glass before setting them in the sun to make sure they are all the same.5. Set all three glasses in the sun.6. Measure the temperature of the three glasses using the thermometer an hour after setting them in the sun (2:30 pm).7. Record measurements.8. Measure the temperature of the three glasses using the thermometer at 3:30.9. Record measurements.

Control: Drinking glass not wrapped in colored paperConstants:Type of drinking glassAmount of water in the glassesStarting temperatureIndependent Variable:Color of paper wrapped around glassDependent Variable: The temperature/heat change
