Science Assignment- Phases of the Moon

What phases of the moon can be seen through the day or night? The only phase of the moon we cannot see through the day or during the night is the new moon. This is because the moon is directly between the sun and the earth and the sun light is shining on the side of the moon you cannot see from earth. All other phases of the moon can be seen through the day and durig the night.

Why we think the moon is changing shape?Due to the earth orbiting around the sun and the moon orbiting around the earth it appears that the moon is changing its shape, but it isn’t. Why we think the moon is changing shape is because the side of the moon we see on earth is always being lit up by the sun and depending on where the moon is in relation to the sun and earth depends on the different phases of the moon.

What is the evidence we have that the rises and set?The evidence that we have of the moon rising and setting is that the moon is only up for a certain period of time. For example: The moon will rise at midday and set at midnight.

Phases of the Moon

Waning CrescentWhen the moon is in the waning phase the moon is positioned infront of the earth, to the left.

Waxing GibbousWhen the moon is in the waxing gibbous phase the moon is behind the earth, to the right.

Full MoonWhen the moon is in the full moon phase the earth is positioned directly in front of the sun, while the moon is directly behind the earth.

Last QuarterWhen the moon is in the last quarter phase the moon is positioned beside the earth, to the left.

Waning GibbousWhen the moon is in the waning gibbous phase the moon is behind the earth, to the left.

Waxing CrescentWhen the moon is in the waxing crescent phase the moon is infront of the earth, to the right.

What is the pattern you can see in the changing of the moon phases? The pattern I have seen through the moon changing shape is the side of the moon we see on earth will gradually build greater until full moon and slowly shrink on the opposite side of the moon we see until it becomes new moon.

How long does it one cycle of the moon phases take? The moon completes one orbit against the stars (the sidereal month) every 27 days, 7hours, 43minutes. Whilst from New Moon to New Moon (synodic month) takes 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes.

Facts about the Phases of the Moon

First QuarterWhen the moon is in the first quarter phase the moon is beside the earth, to the right.

New MoonWhen the moon is in the new moon phase the moon is positioned directly inbetween of the sun and the earth.
