"The walls were hung round with tapestry, said to be from the Gobelin looms, and, at all events, representing the Scriptural story of David and Bathsheba, and Nathan the Prophet, in colors still unfaded, but which made the fair woman of the scene almost as grimly picturesque as the woe-denouncing seer" (Hawthorne,96).
"Had there been a Papist among the crowd of Puritans, he might have seen in this beatiful woman, so picturesque in her attire and mien, and with the infant at her bossom, an object to remind him of the image of Divine Maternity" (Hawthorne,42)
Hawthorne uses biblical and historical allusions in the novel to make the reader interpret the characters' emotions, actions, and appearance in a higher level and with more detail.
"She said that a thousand and a thousand people had met him her, and had written in his book, and have his mark on them.","And, mother, the old dame said that this scarlet letter was the Black Man's mark on thee"(Pearl, 142)
"May God forgive thee!" said the minister. "Thou, too, hast deeply sinned!" (Dimmesdale,197)
