Santorini:Thera

Santorini(Thera)By: Eirene Stavropoulos and Angela Ye

Minoan Eruptionabout 1645 BC to 1500 BC. "single-most powerful explosive event ever witnessed."Environmental Effeccts: felt as far as China and possibly North America and Antarctica. Ash Deposits on Ocean Floor:revealed that the force of the eruption was beyond what humans have or had seen.Casulties: killed upwards of 40,000 people in a few hours.Colossal Tsunamis: 40 ft. tallVolcanic Ash: all across AsiaThree years: Global temperatures dropped and created strangely colored sunsets and cold, wet summersThe Blast: hear 3,000 miles awayThe Explosion: had energy of several hundred atomic bombs in a fraction of a second.Volcano collapsed: this formed a calderaFour or five times more powerful than Krakatoa

InfoType: Stratovolcanoes (aka composite volcanoes)Tectonic Setting: Agean Plate (a subduction zone)Latitude and Longitude:36.404°N25.396°EElevation: 1204 ftStatus: Active

Kind of EruptionMainly effusiveEruptive Products: Andesite, basalt, rhydacite, and daciteRock/Magma:Both felsic and MaficPumice RocksAs the eruptions continue there is more silica Classification: Strombolian and Vulcanian- once every 5000 years Plinian- once every 20,000 years (12 in the last several hundreds of thousand years)

Risks of Living in the "Shadow"-Another Dangerous eruption is possibly imminent. -Deformation at Caldera -Molten rock was being injected beneath the volcano-Volcano's magma chamber is filling and has expanded by 14 million cubic meters-3 football feilds -Earthquakes are occuring-Tsunamis are possible -GPS moved 1.9 - 3.5 inches (5 to 9 centimeters) -The worst case scenario is that the next eruption is sub-plinian, which would severely damage the island and would require a large scale evacuation

History

Most Recent Eruption-was weak, produced a small flat lava dome and opened 2 vents Range-more than 850 meters

"The eruption at Santorini (Greece) is considered to be one of the largest in history, and certainly the most massive volcanic explosion in the last 10,000 years."

Miscellaneous-the average eruption intervals are 200 years-the volcano was named by early Venetians in honor of Saint Irene-the story of the destruction of Atlantis might be related to the Minoan Eruption-Santorini used to be a circular isalnd, but it collapsed due to late Bronze Age eruptions-Most noteworthy eruption is the Minoan Eruption which is on the left side of the presentation
