Biography
"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" Reading
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834)
Coleridge was born in northern England, known as the Lake District. He began writing poetry as a child to escape from an unhappy childhood. He suffered from life-long depression and an addiction to opium, which greatly impacted his poetry. After meeting fellow poet William Wordsworth, the two began a writing partnership that includes the poetry compilation Lyrical Ballads. Coleridge's writing often explored his personal struggles, including his deendency on opium. Poems such as "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan" are known as his "opium" poems. After years of addiction, Coleridge died in 1834.
