Samuel de Champlain

In 1599 Samuel de Chamlpain was tasked by king Henry IV to explore North America ( more specifically Canada ) and to claim more land in the name of France.

Samuel was the son of Antoine de Champlain and the maiden name of his mother was Marguerite Leroy; he was born in the village Brouage, in the ancient Province of Saintonge in August 13, 1574 in France. Little was known about his childhood.

Samuel de Champlains voyage (1601-1613) lasted for 12 years. During this time he found a waterway through North America, explored the great lakes and discovered Quebec on July 3, 1608 .

During his exploration, he did not encounter much, but he and his French men helped the Algonquin fight the Iroquois in 1607. During the war the French traded clothing with the Algonquin. He went back to France two times because of bad news and king Henry IV's assasination

Samuel de Champlain died on December 25, 1635 (61 years old) because of an sudden heart attack.He was the Quebec governer when he passed away.

Samuel de Champlain was famous for founding Quebec and being the first person to map an accurate map of the coast.
