Paulsen offers so much to the readers of his novels; he provides them a chance to live through adventures that they many never get to experience in reality.

STYLE

With regard to gender diversity within Gary Paulsen’s work, main characters are predominantly male as the text tells the story of the characters from a male’s perspective. His books would particularly be helpful within the classroom because, being a mostly female dominated profession, teachers often choose books that they can easily relate to and make connections to in order to model for students.

RELATION TO Classroom

Gary Paulsen’s writing is great for use in studying multiple writing styles. His ability to write from the teenage (often male) perspective is refreshing and helps students stay connected to the story. This author study focuses on using Gary Paulsen’s novels as examples for students to observe about narrative writing with the use of extensive imagery. Most of Paulsen’s books focus on an adolescent character, often male, which has to overcome a problem of some sort.
