Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech was born May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He attended San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and was recognized in 1925 for his talent. In 1929, Dali stole the heart of Gala Eluard. Soon he became the leader of the Surrealist Movement, but was later expelled from the group. To escape from World War II, he and Gala came to the United States in 1940. The Museum of Modern Art in New York gave Dali his first major retrospective exhibit. Dali moved away from Surrealism and towards a classical period. In 1971, he opened the Teatro Museo in his hometown. After Gala's death, his health began to fail. He was later burned in a fire that occured in his home in Spain, in 1984. Soon after a pace-maker was implanted. On January 23, 1989 Salvador Dali died of heart failure with respiratory complications.
