WHAT IT ISSalmonella infection is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines and are shed through feces. Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food.You can find it in raw meat, raw eggs or fruits and vegetables (since they may have been contaminated by water)

SYMPTOMSThey are developed within 8 to 72 hours:-Nausea-Vomiting-Abdominal cramps-Diarrhea-Fever-Chills-Headache-Blood in the stool

THE MOST AFFECTEDPeople who would affect the most would be: infants, young children, pregnant women, transplant recipients, people with weaked immune system and older adults.

PREVENTIONThe key to prevention is proper hygiene and enforcement of public health rules and regulations. Proper hygiene starts with hand washing with soap and water before eating and especially after handling any raw foods such as eggs, meat, or produce. Public-health practices such as chlorination of drinking water, enforcing restaurant cleanliness and employee hand washing.

TREATMENTIt focuses on fluid replacement and electrolytes. Severe cases may need antibiotics or anti-diarrheals.

NEWS"Frozen and raw breaded chicken products are the culprits behind 44 recent cases of Salmonella illness in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, says the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in a notice it issued Sunday morning.The 44 cases happened in Ontario (28), Quebec (12), Nova Scotia (2) and Newfoundland and Labrador (2).
