Cell Communication- ligand is Acyl homoserin lactone (AHL)- receptors are toll-like and are called TLR2 and TLR4- basics of the signal transduction pathway are that spic (the virulence factor in salmonellla) starts the pathway in macrophages (immune system cells)-SPI1 and SPI2 encode effectors to infect, then find the pathways to the kinds of cells where they will survive (theta antigens and clear immunoglobins)

Background- Salmonella is a rod shaped bacteria that is non mobile- commonly found in eggs, poultry, meat, and unpasturized milk and juices- if someone ingests, then they get salmonellosis- symptoms are diarrahea, fever, and vomiting

Current Research2013: Quorum sensing in salmonella is being looked at to possibly be able to cure cancer by planting the salmonella bacteria into the cancerous tumors. 2015: A new sterotype of salmonella has been discovered named Salmonella Lubbock. It is being studied with the interaction among cattle populations.
