BIOGRAPHY

Ruby was born on September 8, 1954 in Tylertown, Mississippi. She was the oldest of 8 children and was born into poverty. Bridges moved to New Orleans when she was 4 years old. A test was held for the city's African American school children to determine which students could attend all white schools. Bridges passed the test.

She showed people that African American kids could go to school and learn. She shared her story with people and was courageous and strong.

She gave encouraging speeches and worked as a travel agent. Ruby studied travel and tourism. Bridges got married and had 4 sons. Also, she started a foundation called The Ruby Bridges Foundation.

MID LIFE

She was elected to go to William Frantz Elementary School, and was escorted to school by federal marshalls. Bridges spent most of her day in the principals office because parents were taking thier children out of school. Barbara Henry became her teacher for the year.
