- Rubidium was discovered by German chemists Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff in 1861. - The two chemists discovered the element when analyzing lepidolite, a mineral that contains Rubidium.- Rubidium comes from the Latin word for deepest red, rubidus, because the discoverers of the element observed a deep red color when they viewed the element with a spectroscope.

Isotopes-Rubidium has only 1 stable isotope (Rb-85). - Most of it's isotopes have little significant commercial use. - Rubidium has two naturally occurring isotopes, Rb-85 and Rb-87. Rb-87 is sometimes used in dating rocks and in high precision timing instruments.- Rb-82 is an isotope that's used in cardiac PET scans.Isotopes of Rubidium Include:Rb-71, Rb-72, Rb-73, Rb-74, Rb-75, Rb-76, Rb-77, Rb-78, Rb-79, Rb-80, Rb-81, Rb-82, Rb-83, Rb-84, Rb-85, Rb-86, Rb-87, Rb-89, Rb-90, Rb-91, Rb-92, Rb-93, Rb-94, Rb-95, Rb-96, Rb-97, Rb-98, Rb-99, Rb-100, Rb-101, Rb-102, and Rb-103.

Three compounds of Rubidium:1) Rubidium Carbonate (Rb2O3) - Used to make special types of glass.2) Rubidium Chloride (RbCl) - Used as a chemical reagent and as a biomarker to track where potassium is taken up by living organisms3) Rubidium Hydroxide (RbOH) - Easily absorbs carbon dioxide and is used in electric storage batteries and etch glass.

Interesting Facts- Rubidium is used in vacuum tubes, the manufacturing of photocells, and creation of special glasses.-Rubidium can be used as a temporary substitution for potassium.- Rubidium may give fireworks a red-violet color.- The element can also be used in ion engines (engines for spacecrafts) because it is easily ionized.- Rubidium is often obtained from mineral production.- It is the 16th most abundant element in the earth's crust.- Scientists are still experimenting with rubidium in order to find out more of it's uses.
