Rožňava is home to the largest square-shaped square in central Europe.

Rožňava was founded in the 13th century as a mining town when deposits of gold and silver were found.

The original name for Rožňava is Rosenau, which refers to the three roses, which is the symbol of the town.

A few miles to the east is Krásna Hôrka, which is a medieval fortress built in the 14th century. It was badly damaged by fire in 2012.

A few miles to the north is Betliar, which is a well-preserved chateau which was built in the 15th century and owned by the Andrassy family until 1945

A few miles to the southwest is Domica Cave, which is the biggest cave in the Slovak Karst in southern Slovakia.
