4. Rosa Parks was an active member of the NAACP serving as the youth leader (1943) and secretary to the President of the branch (until 1957)

2. Rosa's entire family worked for civil rights.3. Her grandfather even stood outside her house with a shotgun when the Ku Klux Klan marched by.

5. Tired of giving in, Rosa's choice started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which left hundreds of buses empty.6. This boycott was organized by the leaders of the Montgomery Improvement Association led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

7.After the 382 day boycott, the ordinance which fined Rosa Parks was struck down, and segregation was ended.8. Rosa Parks did not plan this event, but used her sense of justice to promote it.

1. Her refusal to give up her seat on the bus in December 1, 1955 spurred a national civil rights movement which started efforts to end segregation.

10. Rosa Parks was awarded both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Congressional Gold Medal in 1996 and 1999 respectively.
