Romeo Montague

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Romeo: "It is the east, and Juliet is the sun."P.98, II:2, Line 3

Romeo is a main character in the play and is the Montagues' son. He initially loves Rosaline, but at a party, he sees Juliet and immediately falls head over heels for her. It was love at first sight for the two of them. Romeo unknowingly chooses love from the daughter of his family's enemy, so they have a secretive, forbidden relationship. Still young, he seems to rush into everything with Juliet, such as marriage, and ends up getting banished from Verona after killing Tybalt, the Prince's relative and Juliet's cousin. When the plan to get Romeo back to Juliet fails, Romeo's love for Juliet is proven when he drinks poison to be with her in heaven.

"A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri expresses how love can last forever, or "a thousand years." Romeo and Juliet die for each other, and their love is so strong they will love each other until the end of time. They were willing to risk anything for one another, even when it meant death.

"I Saw Her Standing There" by The Beatles explains love at first sight. Romeo first saw Juliet at a party and immediately, it was love at first sight. He forgot all about Rosaline, his old love, and fell in love with Juliet just by the sight of her.

"With or Without You" by U2 is about the struggle between knowing a relationship is unhealthy but you still can't stay away from the person. Romeo and Juliet know their love is forbidden, but their love brings them together every time.

"Daylight" by Maroon 5 is about how when daylight comes, two people can't be together and they must separate. Likewise, Romeo could not be with Juliet unless it was nighttime, for their relationship was secretive. If they were seen together during the day, it was very dangerous and there could be serious consuqences.

"Stay With Me" by Sam Smith is about wanting your loved one to never leave your side. Romeo experiences the same feeling when he has to leave to Mantua but wants to be with Juliet, and when he finds her "dead," he wishes she was still there with him.

"Love Story" by Taylor Swift conveys a forbidden love story, even using the story of Romeo and Juliet. This would be on Romeo's playlist since it is his story, and it describes all of his feelings towards Juliet and their relationship.

"Battlefield" by Jordin Sparks tells how love does not always come easy and the one you love is worth fighting for. Romeo ended up killing Tybalt and Paris for the one he loves, Juliet.

"Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston shows how every girl is beautiful, and Romeo thought Juliet was beautiful inside and out from the moment he saw her.

Romeo: "Death, that hath suck'd the honey of thy breath,Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty."P.246, V:3, Lines 92-93

Romeo's Love Playlist

Romeo: "I fear, too early; for my mind misgivesSome consequence yet hanging in the starsShall bitterly begin his fearful dateWith this night's revels, and expire the termOf a despised life clos'd in my breastBy some vile forfeit of untimely death. But He that hath the steerage of my courseDirect my sail! Oh, lusty gentlemen!"P.70, 1:4, Lines 112-120
