Romaticism (1800-1860)

(1811)Jane Austin wrote Sense and Sensibility.

(1817)William Bryant wrote Thanatopsis.(1820)Romanticism flourished in America.

Jose De Esperanceda-Born: March 25,1804He had a noble family with military roots. He entered an artilary college, abandoned that to study with Alberto Lista. He was considered to be one of the most characteristic romantic poets. Jose wrote planty of short poems, drawn to literature and politcs which lead him to prison and exile.

Romanticism-a movement in the arts and literature that originated in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual.

Transcendentalism-an idealistic philosophical and social movement that developed in New England around 1836 in reaction to rationalism. Influenced by romanticism, Platonism, and Kantian philosophy, it taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity, and its members held progressive views on feminism and communal living. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were central figures.

Edgar Allan Poe- Born: January 19,1809 in Boston, MassachusettsHe was the son of Daid Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Poe, they were both professiona ators. He was orphaned at the age of 3, with and older brother and younger sister. Poe married cousin Virginia Ellza Clamm Poe when she was 13 and he was 26. He then graduated from the University of Virginia.Some of the things he wrote were; The Tell Tale Heart, and The Black Cat.

Nathaniel Hawthorne-Born: July 4, 1804 in Salem, MassachusettsHis family had a long New England history. He married Sophia Peabody from Salem in 1842, unhappy marriage, with 3 kids. Hawthorne graduated from Bodin College in 1821. Some of his works are; The Blithdale Romance, and The Scarlet Letter. His writing influenced so many people, it made the have a different view on romantiism.
