A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that is solid and inorganic by a chemical formula, usually abiogenic, and has an ordered atomic structure. It is different from a rock, which can be a group of minerals or non-minerals and does not have a certain chemical composition.

Rocks are split into three basic types, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic , depending upon how they were formed. Plate tectonics provides an explanation for how rocks are remade from igneous to sedimentary to metamorphic and back to igneous again.

Facts

The wonderful crystal structures , or hydrolites, form as water evaporates from the internal spaces of the rocks. However, most crystals are found in rocks that have a volcanic origin. As a hot molten rock - called magma - cools, different substances that will crystallize out.
