Rocks: naturally occuring occuring solids made up of mineralsMinerals: naturally occurring substances formed by geological processes

Types of Rocks

Sedimentary Rock

forms when molten lava (magma) cools and turn to solid rock.

formed from sediment that is deposited over time either in water or land

formed over time by extreme pressure and heat

the largest particle in the soil. When you rub it, it feels rough. Sand doesn't hold many nutrients.

Metamorphic Rock

SAND

a soil particle whose size is between sand and clay. Silt feels smooth and powdery.

SILT

the smallest of particles. Clay is smooth when dry and sticky when wet. Clay can hold a lot of nutrients, but doesn't let air and water through it well.

CLAY

Soils are complex mixtures of minerals, water, air, organic matter, and countless organisms that are the decaying remains of once-living things.

Soil stores, moderates the release of, and cycles nutrients and other elements.Soil can regulate the drainage, flow and storage of water and solutes.Soil supports the growth of a variety of plants, animals, and soil microorganisms.Soil acts as a filter to protect the quality of water, air, and other resources.Soils provides anchoring support for plants and human structures.

Functions of Soil

What is the Rock Cycle? Its a model that describes the formation, breakdown, and reformation of a rock as a result of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic processes.
