Rita Moreno

FilmographyRita Moreno appeared in Singin' in the Rain, The King and I, and West Side Story, to name a few. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in West Side Story.

BiographyRita Moreno is a Puerto-Rican born singer/actress. She has won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and a Tony. She is the only Hispanic artist to win all four awards.

Other ContributionsRita Moreno hosted a PBS episode titled "Becoming Bilingual" in which she discussed the difficulty many students face when learning to read in a new languagehttp://www.readingrockets.org/shows/launching/bilingual

While I would not use this video with my third graders, it would be suitable for older students to analyze the immigrant expectations of life in America vs the reality. As the only actual Puerto Rican actor in a lead role in this movie, Rita Moreno broke new ground in a time when Hispanics were not even cast to play Hispanics. This could lead to a discussion on how little Hispanics were represented in the entertainment industry back in the 1960s and whether this has improved.

This is a leveled reader that was included in our HM curriculum. Last year during our biography unit it was difficult to find many Hispanics for our students to do their report on. Rita Moreno is a wonderful example of how you can work to achieve your dreams even if that dream seems unattainable to people from your background. Although she was often cast in stereotypical roles, she did eventually find work that she was proud to be a part of.
