Ring Around The Rosie

The Nursery Rhyme, "Ring Around the Rosie", originated from the Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague. Dating all the way back to the london Plague back in 1665. The london Plague has been mentioned in historical accounts and has been traced all the way over from China over 2300 years ago. The disease itself, killed over 35% (43 million people) of the population in Mid Europe, around the 1300's. The disease, Yernia Pestis, was origianlly carried by rats infected with fleas.

"Ring Around the Rosie"- refers to one of the symptoms of a rosie rash that formed on the skin in the shape of a ring. "Pockets full of Posies"- refers to people having sweet smelling herbs (posies) carried in their pockets because they thought the disease was carried by bad smells. "Ashes, Ashes"- has to due with the fact that the bodies were cremated once the victim had died. "We all fall down"- refers to the people that suddenly died due to the disease.

Interesting Facts

The English version of "Ring Around the Rosie", changes the verse "Ashes, Ashes" to "A-Tishoo, A-Tishoo" because another symptom of the diesease was violent sneezing. Londons Great Fire, Stoped the disease 1666, once it killed all the infected and diseased rats that traveled in water. King Alfonso XI of Castile was the only member of royalty that died from the black death. The most recent victim of the black plague was on May 8, 2011. A 58 year old man contracted it in western states due to high rat populations. Although the latest death happened in 2009. Due to an accidental contraction with the disease while studying it.
