Rick Kittles

BiographyKittles was born in Sylvania, Georgia in 1976 as an only child. He grew up in Central Islip, New York. When Rick was young he wanted to grow up to be a rap musician. Other than this, he was interested in differences and origins of people, as in why everyone looked different and had different skin tones. Kittles went to Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated with a B.S. degree in biology. He then got huis Ph.D in biology from George Washington Univeristy in 1998. He started his career as a teacher is many schools within the New York and Washinton D.C. areas. Rick then became a researcher and funded a project for Howard University researchers, in which they exhume remains of African Americans from an 18th-century graveyard. In 1998 he was hired at Howard Unviersity as an assistant professor of microbiology and named director of the AAHPC (African American Heredity Prostate Cancer) Study Network. Kittles was also the co-director of the molecular genetics unit of Howrd Univerity's National Human Genome Center. Then, in 2004, he became an associate professor at the Tzagournis Medical Research Facility of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Currently, Kittles is the leader of an African Ancestry Incorporation that he cofounded in 2003 with Gina Paige.

Scientific ContributionRick Kittles contributed to science by creating an incorporation that helps Africans find their ancestors. It was possible for Kittles to do this because he is a geneticist. A geneticist is a special or expert in genetics, which is the study of a persons genes and DNA. African Ancestry was founded in 2003 by Kittles and Gina Paige. This incorporation had helped more than 150,000 people re-connect the roots of their family tree. The process is simple, you order a kit, swab the inside of your cheek, and then send it back to the company. From there they will test it and send you your results telling your not only your country of origin but maybe even your ethnic group.

Life Obstacle Kittles did not have to overcome many obstacles to get where he is now. One of the only things that Kittles had to overcome was working and going to school at the same time. He was a teacher at one point while he was in school and a researcher at another point while he was in school. He had to deal with learning new things and teaching children at the same time. Rick did research and homework for school. He had to rearrange his schedule so that he could achieve his goal and get his Ph. D, but without this he would not have created the incorporation that he did.
