The play was a big success even from its earliest production in 1643.

Performed on a simple Elizabethan thrust with scarce senery allowing for more attention on action and speech.

The play was refashioned and simplified by Playwright and Actor, Colley Cibber. Only about a quarter of Shakespeare's text was kept and some characters were done away with completely. This simplified version was also very popular. Running for two centuries, it ran longer than any other 17th century adaptation.

The play continued to thrive. Some of Shakespeare's text was restored, but Cibber's influence was still heavily present.
