Renaissance Artists

The Mona Lisa was Leonardo's most famous piece and one of the few paintings he finished.

Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were the two greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. Historians view them as the two contenders for the title of the archetypal Renaissance person (one with many diverse talents).

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel took him four years to finish. He painted the entire thing while laying on his back. The statue of David was done at age 29 and established him as the best artist in Italy.

The Last Supper was the favourite painting of the King of France. He tried to buy it from Leonardo but couldn't because the Milanese did not let him.

Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, and architect. He was born in Caprese, Italy, in 1474. Ghirlandaio, a master painter, taught him art and he was cared for by the Medici family. During his lifetime, he was considered the greatest artist in Florence.

Leonardo da Vinci was born near Florence, Italy. He was accepted into the Florentine guild of painters in 1472. His most famous pieces are the Last Supper and Mona Lisa.
