Where is it found?
Red-cockaded woodpeckers can be found in the southern pine forests of North Carolina
These woodpeckers find their homes in pine forests, the same forests that lumber companies love. The destruction of the long leaf pine forest is the biggest reason for their decline.
Because of their rapid decline, due to habitat destruction, wherever they are found now becomes protected land
How are they being protected?
Why are they in danger?
The birds need the trees for:- Food- Nest cavities- & to have somewhere to lay their eggs
Cool Fact
It can take up to two years or more for a red-cockaded woodpecker to drill a hole into a tree big enough for a nest cavity.
