The Reconstruction Era was the time period after the Civil War. It was the Rebuilding of the South. The Reconstruction period was from 1863-1877. Following the Civil War there were three amendments that came into play. The three amendment were the 13th, 14th, and the 15th. They all were basically saying that the blacks got equal rights and that they could now vote as a U.S. citizen. The first President was Abraham Lincoln. LIncoln was assassinated by John Wilks Booth. Then his Vice President Andrew Johnson took over in his place. Johnson continued Lincoln's plans despite the bitterness of Lincoln's assassination. The Congress removed all of the Southern Civilian Government. The Freedmens Burea was then developed. They were Northerners trying to help out the south and the newly freed slaves. They offered aid to the railroads, public schools, and they also raised taxes. Another group that was developed was the KKK. They were Southerners that were rioting against the North and against African Americans. The Congress disagreed with the new presidents views of there new amendments. Then congress tried to impeach him. They almost suceeded they were one vote shy of the impeachment.
