Rapunzel: A Groovy Fairy Tale

This twist on the original tale of Rapunzel had her parents die young. In this 70s version, she went to live with her cruel Aunt Esme. Esme lived in an abandoned apartment that had a broken elevator, and too many stairs to take, so Esme climbed up Rapunzel's hair to get to her room. Esme locked her niece up in the room and didn't let her down to see the city. Eventually a boy saw Rapunzel , and had to meet her. He pretended to be Esme to climb up her hair. Rapunzel was shocked to see she pulled up a boy, and they instantly became best friends. He continued to visit her, and Rapunzel eventually accidentally told Esme about her friend. Esme cut her niece's hair and kicked her out, then tricked the boy, Roger into coming back up to the apartment. Esme pushed him off the balcony and he hit his head, losing consciousness and his memory. When Rapunzel was roaming the city, she saw that Roger's band was performing in town that night, so she went to watch. The moment he saw her, he remembered everything! The two remained best friends, and Rapunzel made wigs for Roger's successful band, out of her long, red hair that was cut off.

This book is set in the city in the 1970s, which differs greatly from the original. It will teach students how the mood and tone of the story can change when the setting changes. We will start by making a list on the board of what "setting" means, what it includes, and what it does. Students can then read an original Rapunzel tale, then this one, the make a Venn Diagram to compare how the setting changed the story. Look at illustrations for more ideas!
