Racial Climate Of The Era

1947 – Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play major league baseball!!!By the 1940s, organized baseball had been segregated for many years. Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson of the Negro League's Monarchs agreed to a contract that would bring Robinson into the major league. On October 23, 1945, Jackie Robinson officially signed the contract. Jackie Robinson was not only a great baseball player, Most blacks looked to Robinson for courage, and they saw Jackie as a hero. He brought people together through baseball, Fans of the Dodgers, both black and white, were raving about the success of the team and it unified the fan base.

Connotation of the word HogSomeone who is filthy, greedy, and is self- indulgent.

Jim Crow Laws!33 of the 50 states adopted the Jim Crow laws and each state had different laws than the other. The Jim Crow laws separated the white and African American race and they said that black and white skinned people can have nothing to do with each other. The Jim Crow laws started in the 1890s and lasted until 1965.Some of the Jim Crow laws that were passed were:Marriages are void when one party is a white person and the other is possessed of one-eighth or more negro, Japanese, or Chinese blood.”—Nebraska, 1911“Any white woman who shall suffer or permit herself to be got with child by a negro or mulatto...shall be sentenced to the penitentiary for not less than eighteen months.”—Maryland, 1924

1948!!!!

Civil and Equal Rights!Although African Americans had participated in every major U.S. war, it was not until after World War II that President Harry S. Technology and science of 1948 was the beginning of many designs like the television, camera, telephone and cars. At that time one couldn’t go more than a few feet from the phones base, their cellphones could not fit into their pockets and one could only call from the phone, nothing else. Televisions had a small screen but a huge box shaped cover and there were only a few channels with black and white colors only.

Cultural Events and miscellaneous activitiesIn 1948, the average cost of a new house cost $7,700. Average wage was $2,950. A car cost $1,250. A loaf of bread was 14 cents and a gallon of gas cost 16 cents. Indians defeat the Boston Braves to win the world series that year. On January 11, President Harry S Truman proposed free, two-year community colleges for all who wanted an education.

Imagery is used in A Lesson Before Dying by Jefferson being a Christ figure throughout the novel.

When Grant visits Jefferson, Jefferson says," Hogs don't give nothing. Hogs don'y need nothing" (Gainer, 139). This quote shows figurative language because Jefferson compares himself to a hog and not a human.

I like how you put the speech in the background. I also like the picture of the hog. It shows the definition of one.
