Elizabeth refused to marry anyone because she saw all the problems it caused with her father is sister and didn't want to share her power with a spouse. During her last few years, the country was at a low point. It suffered from failed crops, unemployment, and inflation. Not only that but there were riots over food shortages and rebellion in Ireland.
